유학을 영국으로 가게 된 계기

 

영어로 작성한 부분은 문법적으로 잘못된 부분이 많을 수 있습니다. 양해 부탁드립니다. Because I am not a native speaker, so it might contains a lot of errors in English.

 

유학을 결심하고도 실제로 지원하기까지 많은 시간과 노력이 들어갔습니다.

I spend a lot of times searching schools for applying.

 

유학 갈 나라(언어), 전공, 등록금, 학교에서 요구하는 조건 등을 알아봤습니다.

그리고 혹시 몰라서 TOEFL 시험을 몇 번 봤습니다.

토플 수업을 듣고 시험을 보는 게 한 1년은 걸린 것 같네요.

(결국 토플 점수는 생각보다 잘 안 나왔고, 저는 아이엘츠라는 시험을 다시 보게 되었습니다.)

I considered many things like, languages, majors, fees, and conditions for students.

Also I took TOEFL in case of applying for universities in the US.

Probably, it might take a year for taking some private classes for TOEFL and finally getting TOEFL score.

(However, my score was awful so I eventually took IELTS later.)

약사가 되고 싶다는 생각은 했지만, 기회를 좀 더 많이 열기 위해 다른 전공도 고려했습니다.

I didn't persist in majoring pharmacy eventhough I want to be a pharmacist because I want to recieve more opportunities.

 

가장 먼저 생각한 것은 회사에서 보내주는 국외 연수 프로그램이었습니다.

회사생활을 하며 알게 된 분들께 1년~2년 정도 해외에서 진행하는 연구 프로그램을 여쭤봤었습니다.

제가 나름대로 조사를 해서 연락을 해봤지만, 반응이 그렇게 좋지는 않았습니다.

시큰둥한 반응에 더 충격을 받았던 것 같습니다.

엄청나게 좋은 회사는 아니지만 남들이 부러워할 만한 회사를 다니고 있었고, 공부도 꽤 했었기 때문입니다.

이런 충격으로 더욱 더 해외에서 학위를 받고 논문도 게재해야겠다는 욕심을 내게 된 것 같습니다.

The first thing came up from my head was training programs in my company.

My company supports employees to participate many training programs which proceeded in other countries.

But I need to find out training programs by myself and convince board of directors and institutions to select me.

I sent e-mails to the international institutes but people in the institutions seemed to avoid accepting foreigners.

I was shocked because I believed that I am deligent, passionated, and smart.

I have a job that everybody wants to have and my academic backgrounds are good.

From this experience, I clenched my theeth to study abroad and write research paper on journals. 

 

두 번째로는 미국의 기술정책·경영 / 환경정책 박사를 알아보았습니다.

그러나 토플 점수 외에도 GRE 성적을 요구하는 학교가 많아서 주저하게 되었습니다.

코로나 19로 인해 유학생 수가 급격히 감소하자, GRE 성적을 요구하지 않는 학교도 있었지만 제 CV와 SOP를 보내도 흥미를 보이지 않더군요.

Second plan was going to the US as a Ph.D student majoring technology policy and management or environmental policy.

However, I don't have much stamina to preparing GRE.

Eventhough some universities tried not to request GRE from candidates, professors were not interested in my CV and my SOP.

 

세 번째, 미국의 약대를 알아봤습니다.

미국의 약대는 우리나라처럼 약학 전문대학원의 형태입니다. 등록금이 엄청 비쌉니다.

우리나라에서 일정한 기간 동안 수업을 들으면 약대에 진학할 수 있도록 도와주는 프로그램이 유학원을 통해 많이 제공되고 있는 것 같은데 비용이 만만치 않았습니다.

그리고 유학원의 도움 없이 제가 미국에 있는 약대에 가기 위해서는, 미국에서 다시 학부 과정을 졸업해야 할 것 같았습니다.

왜냐하면 우리나라 자연과학대학이나 공과대학에서는 가르치지 않는 "해부학"을 필수 이수 과목으로 설정한 학교가 많더라고요.

그래서 미국 약대도 포기하게 되었습니다.

The third option was to apply pharmacy school in the US.

Pharmacy schools in the US is similar to Korean pharmacy school. And tuition fees are really expansive.

I knew that I could be a pharmacy students after I took some classes from some private agencies, but it also costs huge amount of money.

And to be honest, I probably need to do my bachelor degree again in the US to go to the pharmacy school in the US.

Because most pharmacy schools in the US asked students to submit "Anatomy" grades if they want to apply.

So I gave up to go to pharmacy school in the US.

이렇게 알아보는 과정 동안 "나는 정말 이 회사에서 발전 없이 살아야 하는 걸까?" 라는 생각을 많이 했습니다.

내가 그나마 할 수 있는 언어는 "영어"라고 생각하니, 남아있는 후보가 영국이였습니다.

(이상하게도 캐나다, 뉴질랜드, 호주는 안 떠올랐네요.)

그래서 영국의 약대에 대해 알아보기 시작했습니다.

I was not in good mood because I felt that I couldn't have many options than I thought.

It was a kind of nightmares whenever I thought about spending my entire life at this company without any development.

I kept thinking what options I had, and I believed that I might have other chances in England.

Because I can speak English as a second language.

(Weidly, I didn't considered Canada, New Zealand, and Austrailia.)

So I started to searching pharmacy schools in England.

 

 

영국의 약대는 4년제이고 졸업하면 석사학위를 받게 됩니다.

고등학교를 졸업하자마자 유학을 가는 학생들은 파운데이션 과정이라는 것을 거치는 것 같습니다.

저는 이미 한국에서 석사까지 마쳤기 때문에 응시 원서만 작성하면 되는 상태였습니다.

그래서 아무것도 모르는 상태에서 용감하게 인터넷을 찾아가며 영국 대학교 몇 곳에 응시원서를 제출했습니다.

그리고 놀랍게도 면접을 제안받았고, 면접 본 학교 모두 합격하게 되었습니다.

Pharmacy schools in England usually takes four years to graduate, and after graduation, I can get master degree.

Students who want to go to universities in England usually should come through Foundation course.

Yet, I already have a master degree, so the only thing I should do was to submit application.

Bravely, I even barely know about British application systems for universities, I could submit my application.

Surprisingly, two universities proposed me interviews, and I got offer from both universities.

 

 

합격이라서 기뻤지만, 끝날 때까지 끝난 게 아닙니다.

제가 받은 offer는 conditional offer였습니다.

즉, 일정한 조건을 충족해야 학교에 입학할 수 있었습니다.

저의 condition은 학교 측에서 요구하는 "아이엘츠 점수" 받기였습니다.

합격 통보를 받고 45일 정도의 시간을 줬습니다.

총 4번의 시험을 보고 원하는 점수를 받아 결국 unconditional offer를 받았습니다.

(일주일에 한 번씩 시험을 봤네요.)

I was really pleased and happy because I got offer, however, I needed to prepare other things.

I got conditional offer, so I needed to meet the condition that university requested, which was IELTS score.

I had only 45 days to hand in IELTS certificates so I took IELTS every week.

After I took fourth IELTS, I finally met the condition and my offer turned to unconditional offer.

회사 생활을 병행하며 진행한 유학 준비였고, 제가 너무나 하고 싶던 전공이어서 합격하고 너무 기뻐했던 기억이 나네요.

여러 시행착오를 거치면서 또 다른 기회를 얻게 돼서 너무 감사할 따름입니다.

I jumped in my head because I was really surprised and happy because I want to study since high shcool.

I am really appreciated for this opportunity because I know the world is not always kind for me.

 

"영국"에 유학을 결심하게 된 건 "시간" 때문이네요.

어쩌면 "영국"이 저에게 기회를 준 것일 수도 있습니다.

학교를 떠난 지 오래되었고 어떻게 보면 남들이 가정을 꾸리고 있을 나이에 시작하는 공부라서 최대한 짧은 기간 내에 원하는 목표를 달성하고 싶었습니다.

"Time" is the reason why I chose England to study. Or maybe Engladn gave me an opportunity.

I would like to spend less time studying and more time working as a pharmacist.

 

한국어로 공부해도 어려운 학문을 타지에서 외국어로 공부할 생각에 막막하기도 하지만 그래도 제가 원하던 삶을 살아볼 수 있는 기회가 된 것 같아 지금은 행복합니다.

It won't be easy because pharmacy is hard enough to study in Korea, but I should learn pharmacy in English.

However, I know this is not a chance for anybody, so I just appreciate it.
